Part 13 Yokohama, For Rugby World Cup Japan 2019 matches, recommendable options in host cities

The last of this series post is about Yokohama, where the final game of Rugby World Cup 2019 will be taken place. Yokohama is 30km away from Tokyo central area and if you take a Bullet train, it will take just 15 minutes from Tokyo station to Shin-Yokohama, the nearest station for the stadium.

In the central part of the port town Yokohama, Cup Noodle Museum is in modern Minato Mirai district.

The museum not only introduces the innovative founder and the company’s history but also provides an opportunity for visitors to MAKE your own Cup Noodle. (Have to pick up a ticket for the experience at the reception counter, first come first served for each time slot or advance reservation required)

You can paint your own cup and choose condiments and soup flavours to put in your cup.

As other interesting food-related spots, Yokohama China Town always filled with local and international tourists is ten-minute-walk from the unique noodle museum.

And within walking distance from the stadium, Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum is available, where you can taste several popular ramen shops come across Japan.

The largest dining choices might be available in term of cuisine and budget range in the capital of Japan. Many information in English is available nowadays in general.

Part 11 Kumamoto, For Rugby World Cup Japan 2019 matches, recommendable options in host cities

First of all, we would like to highlight the update about the city’s symbol Kumamoto Castel which got hugely damaged by the two large-scale earthquakes in 2016.

The city has made great effort to preserve and reconstruct the castle back to the original. So far, the castle being under reconstruction work can be visible only from mound surrounding it. However, from 05 Oct 2019, special access route to the castle’s main building will be opened to the public for limited day and time so we can look at the castle’s main building more closely. (Basically it will be open Sunday and National holidays from 05 Oct, plus afternoon between 05-12Oct, during the period when the games of Rugby World Cup are taken place in the city.)

Kumamoto in the west Kushu has some unique food culture. Their local speciality includes horse meat and lotus root dipped in mustard. Another recommendable dish is “Taipien” (太平燕) local noodle. The bean starch noodle with a lot of vegetables is relatively healthy, compared with regular ramen bowl. It can be found mainly at Chinese or local restaurants in the city.

Part 10 Beppu Oita, For Rugby World Cup Japan 2019 matches, recommendable options in host cities

Beppu, One of the most popular hot spring resorts in Japan, Beppu, is around 10 minutes journey from central Oita city. It will be a must-visit town in the region and can be a good option to stay as well.

 

In the city, the power of natural hot spring is demonstrated in each different but all interesting ways. Some hot spring have colored such as blue or red by natural mineral components and the temperature is too hot for human to take a bath.

We found an interesting food spot in Kannawa traditional hot spring town area, “Jigoku-mushi Kobo”(Steaming-hell studio) run by the city. We can cook food with natural hot steam at the studio with help of their staff. Food and drink are available for purchase there or we can bring some food from outside with supplement charge as long as they are fit for the cooking way.

Of course, across Beppu city, many hot spring bath options are available as public bath at reasonable fee or in accommodations.

Tips: To take hot spring bath, if you have a tattoo, make sure if the facility allows it or not in public baths. Some of them have no tattoo policy and others do allow or have a private bath as an alternative option.

Part 9 Fukuoka, For Rugby World Cup Japan 2019 matches, recommendable options in host cities

Fukuoka, the capital of Kyushu region, is also the origin of Tonkotsu (pork bone soup) ramen.

One of must-visit spots in Fukuoka is “Yatai” food stalls appearing on evening across the city. Very central night district Nakasu area is one of the places where we can find many choices of Yatai. Many of them have English menu.

Try some local dishes with beer and/or local distilled alcohol, Shochu, by hopping around some stalls.
